Autumn Terrier Show 2004

The 2004 Autumn Show saw larger crowds than last year and this too was reflected in the Terrier Ring. Our Judge for the day was Neil Everley a keen Terrier Man from the Quorn Country.

The standard of terriers being shown was high and particularly large numbers of Jack Russell's were seen.

The first trophy of the day was for the Champion Puppy, which went to a smashing Black Fell puppy named Rook owned and shown by Mr D Sykes.

The Best Dog prize, was taken by Mr Underhill's Lakeland Dog, Rock. The bitch classes were as competitive as the earlier dog classes but the eventual best bitch was awarded to Mr D Sykes with Tonic. Tonic again was a Black Fell bitch who turned out to be the mother of the Champion Puppy, Rook.

Before the judging of the Champion Terrier of the Show, classes for Best Veteran Terrier over 7 years, Best Couple and Best Child Handler took place. The class for the Best Child Handler was well supported with all the children receiving prizes.

The climax of the afternoon was the judging of the Best Dog and Best Bitch for the Champion of the Show. Neil Everley said before making his decision "that there was nothing in it and he was finding it very hard to find a winner". After what seemed like a "lifetime" Neil choose the Black Fell Bitch, Tonic as Champion of the Show 2004.

My thanks to Olley and Tim for their help on the day and particularly to Neil who made an excellent job of judging.

The Countryside goes to Town

On 7 August, the Fitzwilliam team hit Peterborough as part of the Countryside Alliance "Countryside to Town" week.

We took a stand in the town centre, armed with new leaflets ("Do you know enough about hunting to ban it?"), correx boards and, best of all the new "59% say keep hunting" balloons which were a great hit with the children and maybe even provoked the odd thought or two amongst the adults. Next time we'll take helium and a pump (and I hope those who did the blowing up have now recovered.......particularly Adam and Clare who stuck bravely to the task!)

Despite the heat, we remained more or less cool in our attempt to spread the word. Most of our visitors were supportive, and several of those who were not at least engaged in polite dialogue. Some graphic photos provided by Penny Fortescue provided good back-up to our discussions - those chickens and ducks did not die in vain. Our lady master "held up" very well with the rest of the team out on the street - quite a few got turned back into the stand for a chat!

Rosie the dog was a complete star and a great hit with the press photographer as well as several passing dogs. Thank you to Philip Slane for bringing her - a natural in front of the camera and so cool (Rosie that is!)

Thank you to all those who volunteered - your efforts are very greatly appreciated by the Countryside Alliance.

The East of England Show 2004

Once again, the Fitzwilliam entered teams into the Inter-Hunt Relay. Initially we had two teams entered (Fiona Banks, Nick Carlisle, Paul Castle, Catherine Charlton, Trevor Marks, Jo Olver, Tracy Riddington and Lizzie Thomas), but owing to a confusion over whether the Oakley were entering a team, we were asked to find a third team at the last moment. Many thanks to Kay Castle, Rebecca Simpson, Helen Morrell and Roly Smith for stepping in at the last moment abd agreeing to take part with no practice whatsoever. Unfortunately, we were not able to repeat our success of the previous two years and the Competition was won by the Pytchley. This means that in the four years that the competition has been run, the Pytchley have won it twice and we have won it twice. Many thanks also go to Terry Pinner and Bob and Sally Castle for running and training the teams.

Other Highlights of the Show this year were the displays put on by the Pony Club (largely Fitzwilliam) and the Fitzwilliam hounds parading on the Sunday.

Garden Tour and BBQ

Around 50 people gathered at Milton for the garden Tour and BBQ. Sir Philip and Lady Isabella showed the assembled company around the various different parts of the Gardens and greenhouses at Milton, fielding questions as they went, on a lovely, sunny June evening. After the tour, everybody enjoyed a BBQ and pimms, organised by Mr & Mrs Armstrong and Mrs. Fortescue.

The Hunt Draw and Christmas Famiy Quiz

The Hunt Draw, organised once again, but sadly for the last time, by Penny Fortescue was another great success. Thousands of tickets were printed and sold by our team of ever-willing ticket sellers. Many, many thanks to them, and also to the people who donated prizes for the Draw. £600 was given once again to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. A list of prizes and prize-winners is Here.
Following the Draw came the Christmas Family Quiz, which had a slightly different flavour to our other quizzes, being a table-top quiz for teams, with many more picture rounds than before, and with many of the questions being aimed at the younger members. Another item of interest was the "Name that Tune" round, with George Adams blowing various calls on the hunting horn for the teams to identify. A round that seemed to be less popular, particularly with one or two teams in hot contention for first place, was a round of True or False questions based on internet rumours.
Hot contention was indeed the name of the game, with the top five teams being within only a few points of each other. The eventual winners (yet again) were Agi's Army who pipped Nick Carlisle's team by only one point. We must also mention our team made up entirely of Under16 members, who came 4th overall. An outstanding effort.

2003 Hunt Lunch

Just over 100 people met at the Peterborough Suite (ICI Center) for the Annual Hunt Lunch. A three course lunch of soup, Roast British Beef and a choice of puddings was followed by an amusing speech from Roy Bird MBE, long-time Secretary of the East of England Agricultural Society, about his Following this, Andrew Wager conducted a fast and furious auction, selling several lots to generous buyers for a considerable sum. Many congratulations go to Carrie Marks for arranging yet another successful lunch.

Quiz at Great Gidding

14 Teams turned out for another hotly contested Quiz at Great Gidding Village Hall. There were nine rounds of questions, with round five being a tabletop round taking place over the supper break, with the meal being prepared by Rosemary Armstrong and her helpers. Once again, Penny Fortescue's question-writing team put together a searching series of questions - more difficult than some previous quizzes, some thought - but the competition was still stiff. At the end of round nine, the "Fen Tigers", capatined by Joint Master, Mrs Anderson, just pipped "Agi's Army" to take the first prize.

Milton Hall Tour and Dinner - 23rd September 2003

21 guests arrived at the Shooting Dining Room at around 6 pm to be greeted with Bucks Fizz and canapés. Sir Philip and Lady Isabella Naylor-Leyland then took them on a guided tour of Milton Hall, which took approximately an hour and a half and was considered to be most informative and entertaining. On their return to the Shooting Dining Room, Rosemary Armstrong had prepared a delicious three course dinner, comprising poached salmon to start, followed by individual game pies, served with seasonal vegetables. Desert was a choice of meringues with fresh cream and chocolate sauce or bread-and-butter pudding. Coffee, cheese and biscuits and petit fours finished off the evening. Many thanks to Sir Philip and lady Isabella for their hospitality and to all those who assisted as part of the serving and washing-up team.

Dogs of War Protest- 9th July 2003

A small convoy left Kennels mid-afternoon, headed by the second-horse box containing our deputation of five couples of Fitzwilliam bitches on their way to protest against the third reading of the Governments iniquitous anti-hunting bill in Parliament Square.

The drive to London was straightforward enough, although the drive through London was unnerving for some of our less experienced London drivers. However, after only one stop for map reading we arrived on time at Smiths Square to disgorge the Hounds (all wearing their "if lost" labels) on leads for the short walk to Parliament Square.

There were hundreds of hounds and working dogs of all shapes and sizes in Parliament Square, accompanied by their handlers. The atmosphere was very exciting, with lots of old friends to meet - our deputation was met by several more Fitzwilliam supporters who had made their own travel arrangements - but also because of the atmosphere of determination and refusal-to-be-beaten that permeated throughout.

As well as group photographs with all of the canine protesters, there were a number of very robust speeches from the podium, notable speeches coming from Robin Page, Kate Hoey MP, a reformed member of the Hunt Sabs, and Simon Hart. Richard Burge, the retiring Chief Executive of the Countryside Alliance, made a very rousing speech about the struggle, which faces us over the next few months, together with some entertaining and entirely accurate comments about our opponents.

After a prolonged mass fanfare of hunting horns at around 7 pm, we headed back to Smiths Square to get back into the transport for the journey home. The hounds adapted to being on leads extremely well, and, I think, everyone agreed that it has been a good outing.

Another white-knuckle ride through London back to the A1 for the journey home - which was punctuated by a brief pit-stop at a wayside inn for well-earned refreshments. The convoy returned to kennels at around 10.30 pm.

Families 4 Hunting Women's Vigil - 29th/30th June 2003

By Nina Camm

Boarding the National Bus at the Queensgate bus station in Peterborough at 2pm on Sunday 29th June I thought, "Here I go on yet another hunting adventure". I can tell you by the time I got off the same numbered bus on the Monday night I was ready for a bath and bed.

The Women's Vigil held in Parliament Square from 5pm on the Sunday through to 10pm on the Monday night had been organised by the Countryside Alliance to promote the fact that hunting is not a male activity and that women and children play just as big a role. The timing of the event was to co-incide with the 3rd Reading of the Hunting Bill in Parliament.

Armed with a fold up chair, a few extra clothes, plenty, and I mean plenty, of chocolate and my lifesaving Alton Towers bright orange poncho; I got settled in on the grass. I bumped into a couple I knew, sadly not enough whom I knew from any neighbouring hunts. We were entertained by a continuous string of performers who did help to pass the time away along with my book. Official sleep time came at midnight, then the rain started and boy did it rain, my poncho was fantastic, many called me an "orange" but I was dry and they weren't. Sleep was intermittent, usually being broken by a stiff neck but it was bearable. Several times during the "ordeal" I sent Bill text messages telling him how fast it was raining, funny how he never replied to any!!

The smell of bacon cooking at 5am was heavenly, still raining mind you but by then I didn't care. Clarrisa Dixon Wright was cooking bacon served in baps, which, accompanied by a hot cup of tea with at least ten sugar lumps in, was just the tonic. As the morning went on, the rain stopped and many more female hunters arrived, it was great to see so many from the Fitzwilliam turn up early in the morning.

The vote was nothing more than we expected but I came away from that experience with even more resolve to continue to fight for what I so strongly believe in. My hunting roots will always be with the Belvoir, but in supporting Bill in his job my loyalties have had to adjust and I hope that I am able to become a part of the Fitzwilliam as well. I believe that it doesn't matter which team you support, the fact that we all work together to preserve what we believe to be right is the key, and to make sure that those hounds in kennels have a future.
